  5. child of J.R. and his dead mistress Kristin?  Enter the Ewing
  6. labyrinth and be hooked or be damned.

  8. Early Days (CBS Cable). David Storey's memorable song at
  9. twilight, adapted by Director Anthony Page from Lindsay
  10. Anderson's National Theater production in London. Storey wrote
  11. this meditation on age and regret especially for Ralph
  12. Richardson, who gives one of his greatest performances.

  14. The Golden Age of Television (PBS). A selection of golden
  15. oldies from the '50s, including Marty and The Days of Wine and
  16. Roses, demonstrated that, yes, they really did do things better
  17. back then.

  19. Hill Street Blues (NBC). Probing the soul of the inner-city
  20. cop with compassion and flipped-out wit. Hill Street won
  21. critical raves, eight Emmys and--finally!--enough viewers to
  22. make it a hit.

  24. The Patricia Neal Story (CBS). Prime time offered enough
  25. triumph-over-a-bizarre-disease TV movies to choke a hospital,
  26. but Dirk Bogarde and the redoubtable Glenda Jackson made this
  27. particular version wrenching and true.

  29. The Phil Donahue Show:  "Missing Kids" (Syndicated). A
  30. heartfelt and harrowing episode from what is consistently the
  31. best national talk show.

  33. SCTV (NBC). The funniest nights on television, with TV itself
  34. the target of repeated maulings by a company of six comic
  35. assassins. Their "Sammy Maudlin Show," an excursion into
  36. late-night chat and sleaze, has a kind of purgatorial hilarity,
  37. like a Friars' roast written by Sartre.

  39. The Shock of the New (PBS). A spirited tour, in an eight-part
  40. series, by TIME Art Critic Robert Hughes through the art and
  41. architecture of that most difficult of all centuries, the 20th.

  43. Steve Martin's Best Show Ever (NBC). A well-turned hour of
  44. live, zoned-out comedy, which featured everything from Belushi
  45. to Bartok and raised the question, "Did dinosaurs build
  46. Stonehenge?"
  47.  
  48. Taxi (ABC). A fourth season of high-quality laughs from the
  49. Sunshine Cab Co. Taxi, WKRP in Cincinnati (CBS) and Bosom
  50. Buddies (ABC) are the win, place and show-off of current
  51. sitcoms.
